A few days after Christmas, I had the pleasure of meeting Kristy and Jared as their engagement photographer. To close out each year, Kristy’s family travels from across the country in both directions to spend the holidays together. This year, they had an extra special reason to celebrate, as Kristy and Jared had just gotten engaged! The home where the family shares the Christmas and New Year's holidays has been in Kristy's family for several generations. I loved hearing her grandmother's story about exactly where along the incredible rock wall which hugs the property that her own grandmother had been married so many year prior. And the family shared funny stories about their grandfather, who has since passed, but whose memory is clearly a huge part of this family’s time together.
This sweet couple enjoys lots of outdoor activities together at their home in Montana, and Jared comes from a family of ranchers, so they are used to extreme weather. We were blessed with a “warm” winter day for most of their engagement session, but these two kept smiles on their faces and laughed together the entire time, even after a much colder winter wind picked back up as the sun began to set. And we had a very funny moment when I joked that it was just like being in Montana when the wind gusts created a tiny current on the open lake water, and Kristy followed perfectly with: “A River Runs Through It”!
I also took some senior photos for Kristy’s cousin that afternoon, who was in town from Florida, and did a mini family session with the entire group who was there that day. The upper balcony of the home which overlooks the lake, and the natural seating which was lovingly built into the rock wall made for perfect large group shots. And the house had been beautifully decorated for Christmas, which made all of the photos very festive. It was a wonderful afternoon getting to meet this family and to see how close they all are despite the thousands of miles which separate them for most of the year. It is certainly a testament to the family ties and values forged generations earlier, and fostered by each generation since that spending quality time together is an absolute priority, no matter how far apart they live, or how busy they all become. It was very touching and inspiring.
I greatly enjoyed helping this couple celebrate their wonderful news by taking their engagement photos. I wish Kristy and Jared all the best as they finish their plans for their rustic wedding this coming summer back out West and then continue their life together! Here are some of the images from our afternoon together so you can see how just how happy and in love they are.
I hope that everyone has a wonderful weekend - stay warm and safe if you are in winter's icy grip!
